So how do you sum up the strength to break free of societal constraints and embrace who you truly are? It takes time and a compilation of small actions.
Here are a few steps to get you started:
Just as we plan time with friends or family, we need to plan time for ourselves. In doing so, we allow ourselves to experience all of the things that bring us joy and satisfaction. The activities that bring us the most fulfillment are what reveal our true calling.
Set up “dates” with yourself, scheduling time to do the things you love to do. You can include others if you’d like, as long as you stand by the goal of choosing something that fills you up.
It takes courage to embark on your own journey, but journeys are always better with good company. That being said, who you surround yourself with matters. Your people not only reflect who you are, but where you want to go in life. To embrace your individuality, you must surround yourself with those who bring out the best in you and who want the best for you. Surround yourself with people who are there to provide support and will give you the extra push you need when times get tough. Choose people who love you for what makes you YOU.
The same concept applies to who you look to for guidance outside of your circle. Take a look at your social media feeds. Are the accounts you follow inspiring, positive, and uplifting? Do they encourage you to stay true to yourself and feel secure in your “why?” Or are they pushing out information that results in negativity or insecurity within?
Purge any account that doesn’t inspire you or bring you joy. Curate your feed so that the content you consume daily inspires you and fills your cup with love and happiness.
Going against the grain is easier said than done, but as they say, nothing worth having comes easily. Create the life you desire by choosing the path built specifically for you. Because YOU and your happiness matter.
It isn’t easy, paving your own way, but it is always worth it in the end.
Embrace the Outlander within.
1. What prevents you from embracing your true self? Are these barriers external or internal (self-made)?
2. List 10 things you can do to remove these barriers from your life, beginning with small steps and leading up to big leaps. These steps will become guiding factors as you embrace your individuality.
3. Take 10 minutes to scroll through your social media feeds. Note who you follow & and if they are: positive or negative, inspiring or uninspiring, individualistic or conformists. What you see on your daily feed should inspire you to be the absolute best version of yourself. If this isn’t the case, purge the accounts you follow and fill your social space with love, inspiration and positivity.
